News of the Day 8-21-06

OK's implementation of laws banning sex offenders from living within 2000 ft. of day-care centers, playgrounds and parks, and schools is having the predictable unintended consequences, according to this AP story. Offenders are moving into rural areas unprepared to deal with them, jumping off sex offender registries, and becoming more likely to re-offend. 40 sex offenders dropped off Tulsa's registry in the law's first month. Says one of the law's co-sponsors, "The solution is real simple . . . don't commit the crime." . . . Also from OK, our DOC has changed its administration procedures for lethal injections in response to recent court challenges. A larger dose of anesthesia will now be given prior to the heart-stopping drug.
