Rats Like This Better

A major part of the story we tell about cocaine to justify condemning its users as beyond help and its sellers as evil is the study that showed that rats trained to get coke as a reward would starve themselves to get the drug and its reward. Therefore, humans are unable to control themselves once they get it and need to be locked away and those who sell it to them are Satan personified and need to be locked away (uh, can you do that to Satan?). Okay, all well and good. So what are we going to do about the users of this substance that those rats will ignore coke for, even those rats already addicted to the coke, and about the people who sell it to them? A substance that endangers humans annually far worse than cocaine does.

(In case you don't want to go to the link, it's sugar water. You know, like Coke.)

(Oh, and it goes for doughnuts, too. Insert your favorite answer to "What will that do to our police forces if we allow it?" joke here.)
