News of the Day, Tuesday, June 19, 2007

  • Okay, a decade ago, projections showed Britain, the highest incarceration nation in Europe (note a trend here?), would hit 80,000 inmates about now. They've hit about 80,000 about now and that "Liberal" leadership there says the answer is more prison beds. The Conservatives say, "Hey, morons, you were warned about this 10 years ago, did nothing, and now offer nothing but more of the same." Sorta like crossing into Bizarro-land, isn't it?
  • This may not seem like a corr sent study, but any report finding this kind of dramatic forecasted increase in treatment of any disease that will more and more afflict the rapidly aging prison populations in the US, in this case, diabetes, is one of the most important things for us in the field to be paying attention to.
  • Finally, in another medically related news bit, it may be that the drugs we give ADHD kids predispose them for substance abuse later. It did rats, anyway. Another “stop a problem here, start one later there” deal. (h/t Think Outside the Cage)
