When Your Doctor Is High

Good story on the problem of doctors with substance abuse problems who are allowed to practice, sometimes with bad results with examples in the article (although, interestingly, absolutely no comparable stats or stories for doctors with bad results who were cold stone sober). CA may stop allowing these folks into confidential rehab programs as a result of the uproar some of the cases have caused, but advocates of the programs say that’s the best way to make sure these guys go underground, never get treatment, and do even more damage. IOW, the typical complex and intractable dilemmas we face when dealing with what to do about substance abuse anywhere. My major question was, why is it these wealthy professionals have these programs and get second, third, fourth chances when the rest of us (except for performing athletes, actors, and celebrities) don’t?
